Japanese Sweet - Onrai Manto Pineapple Cake in Hiroshima 呉の鳳梨萬頭(おんらいまんとう)

Onrai Manto, Hiroshima pineapple cake

As I've written in several posts, I moved too many times in my childhood so I can't say where I'm from in Japan. But my parents are definitely from Hiroshima although they sometimes pretend to be from Tokyo....

Anyway, Onrai Manto or this Hiroshima pineapple cake is made by Tenmeido, a Japanese cake bakery in Kure city, Hiroshima prefecture. Kure city, my dad's hometown, used to be a base for Japan's navy before the war and currently is one of the main ports for Japan Maritime Self Defense Force.

I didn't like cakes, cookies or even ice creams, only eating fruit jellos when I was small, but now enjoy these flour desserts, including this pineapple cake!

The Kure-city pineapple cake tastes like (or actually is one type of) Taiwanese pineapple cakes. It's available in Hiroshima Brand Shop in Ginza (as Innoshima Island Orange Jello) and 98 yen including Japanese VAT. My chubby husband bought ten of them last week. I keep telling him, before eating, "Do buttocks & pen exercise!!!!"

  1. Very useful entry.
My wife and I just returned from Hiroshima (we live in Osaka) and we received exactly these cakes from friends living in Kure. I am not a big fan of Manju, but these pineapple and lemon cakes changes my whole outlook on Japanese sweets. Thanks for the explanation.
