Red Bougainvillea At December End

Japanese follows English.

I wrote about bougainvillea before, but that was pink. This time I found red ones in my neighborhood.

Bougainvillea was named after Louis Antoine de Bougainvillea, and it's called in Japanese also "bu-gainbiliya," Japanese pronunciation of bougainvillea, but it has other Japanese names. One is "ikada kazura," meaning a "raft vine" after the shape of the bract looking like a raft and the cream yellow petal a boatman. Another is "kokonoe kazura" or "multi-layered vine."

I saw the pink one in August, so I didn't expect to find bougainvillea late December in Tokyo or actually I didn't expect to see any colorful flowers in the neighborhood. Almost every flower and color is gone, so this bright pretty red flower made me very happy😊
