Houttuynia Cordata (Fish mint)

Japanese follows English.

The season of one of my favorite plants has come. This is houttuynia cordata, also known as fish mint or chameleon plant. It's fish mint because the leaf has a fishy taste and chameleon plant because it provides colorful ground cover like a chameleon, though the plants in my neighborhood are all white, green and a little red, which is beautiful but not that colorful...

I love the plant for something yellow green protruding from the center of what looks like its flower. The protruding thing is a spike and what look like petals are not petals but bracts.

As a curious person, I've been wanting to smell the leaves to confirm that they really smell fishy, but fish mints are ground cover and likely to have been showered with dog pee...😂
