These are wintersweet blossoms (Chimonanthus praecox ‘Luteus’ or Chimonanthus praecox f. concolor). The plant is native to China and came to Japan at the beginning of the Edo period (1603 to 1868). Wintersweet starts to bloom in January and February and you would see two types of wintersweet blossoms in Tokyo, that is, those in this post, Chimonanthus praecox ‘Luteus’/Chimonanthus praecox f. concolor, or those of Chimonanthus praecox. The blossoms of the former are yellow in their entirety while the latter's inner part is purple red. The fruits are oval and look edible but wintersweet is toxic in its entirety.
