Highbush blueberry (Vaccinium corymbosum) is native to North America, producing flowers from April to May and berries from June to July in Japan. The blueberry was introduced to Japan in 1951 but it took 20 years for farmers to become able to commercially grow the plant due to lack of skills to grow it and the completely different weather from its place of origin. It's hotter and more humid in Japan. But now, highbush blueberries are grown in several places and the Nagano and Gunma prefectures are the main producers of the berry.

Blueberry flowers resemble flowers of white enkianthus (Enkianthus perulatus) each other. Both are small, white, and bell shaped but no wonder. Blueberry and Enkianthus perulatus are both in the Ericaceae family.
