Shrimp plants are native to Mexico, came to Japan in 1931 (according to some websites), and are now grown nationwide. Their Japanese name is "koebi sou," which translates into "shrimp plant," exactly the same.

コエビソウ（小海老草）です。メキシコ原産で1931年に日本に来たと言われています（証拠はないようですが）。英語でも shrimp plant。そのまんまです。
