Prunus Campanulata 'Yoko' (Yoko Cherry) 陽光桜（ヨウコウザクラ）

This is prunus campanulata 'Yoko' or Yoko cherry, a child between cerasus x yedoensis 'Amagi-yoshino' and prunus campanulata (Taiwan cherry). The baby pink is so pretty!

You may think that cherry blossoms are pink, but Yoshino and many other cherry flowers are white. You might also think that cherry was just one type, but that's not true. Japan has about 100 types of cherry trees, including the following wild varieties:

• Prunus x yedoensis or Yoshino cherry (THE cherry in Japan)
• Cerasus itosakura or Edohigan cherry 
• Prunus incisa or Fuji cherry
• Cerasus jamasakura or mountain cherry
• Prunus sargentii, or Sargent's cherry or north Japanese hill cherry
• Prunus campanulata, or Taiwan cherry, Formosan cherry, or bellflower cherry
• Prunus speciosa or Oshima cherry
• Cerasus x kanzakura or Kawazu cherry

"Cherry" usually refers to "Yoshino cherry" in Japan, except for the Okinawa prefecture where "cherry" means Taiwan cherry, and the cherry blossom timing reported on news programs this season is all about Yoshino cherry (again except for the Okinawa prefecture). Japanese people appreciate the ephemeral beauty of cherry blossoms and enjoy (more?) eating and drinking under the trees, which is out of their reach this April due to COVID-19...

This year, I've seen two of the above, i.e., Taiwan cherry and Oshima cherry, so far, and now am waiting for Yoshino cherry to bloom in a week or so. I'm looking forward to seeing other cherry flowers🌸 after the pandemic!

近所の陽光桜（ヨウコウザクラ）です。陽光桜は天城吉野（アマギヨシノ）と寒緋桜（カンヒザクラ）の交配。ベビーピンクがとっても可愛いです！

桜は種類が多いんですね。下の基本種を含め、日本には100種類ほどの桜があるそうです。

• ソメイヨシノ（染井吉野）
• エドヒガンザクラ（江戸彼岸桜）
• マメザクラ（豆桜）
• ヤマザクラ（山桜） 
• オオヤマザクラ（大山桜）
• カンヒザクラ（寒緋桜）
• オオシマザクラ（大島桜）
• カワヅザクラ（河津桜）

今年は既に寒緋桜、大島桜を鑑賞し、今は染井吉野の開花を待っています。コロナが終わったら他の桜をたくさん見に行きたいです🌸！
