Netsuke - Daruma and Tengu

Japanese follows English.

These are little Daruma and Tengu netsuke sculptures at Tokyo National Museum. The Daruma netsuke was carved by Hoshu Yamagata from ivory and the Tengu netsuke by Omu Yoshida from also ivory. (For a definition of netsuke, see this post.)

"Daruma" by Hoshu Yamagata, ivory

Daruma doll is a Japanese traditional doll

"Karasu Tengu," by Omu Yoshida, ivory

Tengu is a legendary creature

A Daruma doll or Daruma is a hollow, round, Japanese traditional doll modeled after Bodhidharma, a semi-legendary Buddhist monk and founder of the Zen tradition of Buddhism, while Tengu or literally "heavenly dog" is a type of legendary creature in Japanese folk religion.

These little Daruma and Tengu reminded me of a Japanese picture book entitled, "Little Daruma and Little Tengu," a story about a little Daruma boy who wants to be like, in every term, a friend of his, i.e., a little Tengu boy. I read this book when I was also little😊, and it was lovely to remember this picture book (look at the two little boys on the cover!) but it's so sad that I couldn't recall the story even after reading the plot on the internet...😂

If you are interested in another Japanese picture book for preschool kids, try "The Little Old Lady in the Strawberry Patch (Ichigo batake no chiisana obaasan)."
