I heard the Star Wars theme tune when I looked at this netsuke sculpture in the Tokyo National Museum. According to Oxford Lexico, a netsuke is a small carved ornament—especially of ivory or wood—worn as part of traditional Japanese dress as a toggle to attach an article to a kimono sash.

The netsuke in the photo above is 'Ancestor Fukurokuju,' carved by American netsuke sculptor Michael Birch. Fukurokuju is one of the Seven Lucky Gods in Japanese mythology, where fuku means happiness, roku means wealth (or prosperity), and ju means longevity.

Mr. Birch's netsuke sculptures are so funny and kawaii that I have previously written about another of his pieces, 'Lovelorn ghost.'

Netsuke "Ancestor Fukurokuju" Is he a Jedi?
