White Platycodon Grandiflorus (Balloon Flower)

This is a white balloon flower (Platycodon grandiflorus). I saw purple ones last month and double-flowered ones a few days ago. I didn't know the plant produces white flowers. I wanted to photograph its balloon shaped white buds but couldn't find one.

These are double-flowered balloon flowers (Platycodon grandiflorus). I wrote about single-flowered balloon flowers last month. Just the single or double difference makes them completely different flowers.

This is a balloon flower (Platycodon grandifloru). The purple is so beautiful! The name "balloon flower" is after the balloon-shaped flower buds (2nd photo).

I wrote about clasping Venus' looking-glass (Triodanis perfoliata) last month and its Japanese name is "small platycodon" because of their similar flower shapes and colors (but not the size).

These are balloon vine or love in a puff (cardiospermum halicacabum) and balloon flower or Chinese bellflower (platycodon grandiflorus). I saw them at Mukojima Hyakkaen Garden and in my neighborhood in Tokyo.

Balloon Flower Was Morning Glory in Japan

Japanese follows English.

These are balloon flowers blooming in my neighborhood.

Deep purple

I first found deep purple balloon flowers and a few weeks later white and pale purple ones. They are pretty in any color.

Surprisingly, balloon flower was called "morning glory" during the Manyo period (from the mid-7th to the mid-8th century) in Japan because then beautiful flowers blooming in the morning were all called morning glory. Do you find it inclusive or sloppy?

This reminded me of another inclusiveness or sloppiness issue about the colors of Japan, specifically, blue and green. If you are interested, read "Goryeo Celadon and Colors of Japan."

詳しくお知りになりたい方は「Goryeo Celadon and Colors of Japan 高麗青磁は青?
