Yellow Cherry Blossoms (Ukon Cherry) 黄色の桜「ウコン（鬱金）」

I enjoyed YELLOW and GREEN cherry blossoms yesterday at Hama-rikyu Gardens in Tokyo. The yellow one is Ukon (Cerasus Sato-zakura Group ‘Grandiflora’ A. Wagner) in this post and the green one is Gioiko (see this post)! Ukon and Gioiko cherry trees are both late bloomers, so luckily I was able to enjoy both blossoms. 

Ukon cherry blossoms are popular for their yellow flowers whose core turns red before they fall, creating a beautiful color contrast between yellow, green and red. The flowers are multi-petalled and freshly gorgeous!! The name Ukon, meaning turmeric, is after the yellow color of fabric dyeing with turmeric. The chloroplasts of Ukon and Gioiko both contain carotenoid (i.e., yellow pigment) and chlorophyll (i.e., green pigment) but Ukon's contain less chlorophyll, producing greenish YELLOW flowers while Gioiko's contain more chlorophyll, producing yellowish GREEN blossoms.   

Yellow Cherry Blossoms are Turning Pink 黄色の桜がだんだんピンクに

At least two types of cherry blossoms change their color from their original color to pink while in bloom. One is Oshima cherry, whose blossoms change from white to pink and the other is these yellow blossoms, Ukon (Cerasus Sato-zakura Group ‘Grandiflora’ A. Wagner), which are originally green yellow but turn pink in the flower center. That's why you wouldn't notice Ukon cherry blossoms when they start to bloom because their yellow green blossoms blend into the green leaves. Now the flower center turning pink, Ukon blossoms have started to reveal their hidden beauty.

I enjoy cherry blossoms every year, in particular these yellow blossoms, Ukon. They're very beautiful but don't attract much attention because of Oshima cherry blossoms nearby. It's understandable that pink cherry blossoms stand out more than yellow ones. Every time I photograph them, however, people first look at me, wondering what I'm doing and then notice this tree is also a cherry tree with yellow flowers. Then, I proudly say that this is Ukon cherry, producing yellow blossoms😉. 

Cherry Blossoms Change from Yellow to Pink (Cerasus Sato-zakura Group ‘Grandiflora’ A. Wagner) 黄とピンクのウコン（鬱金）

I wrote about the yellow cherry Ukon last week and at that time, the blossoms were still yellow, but now they've started to change to pink!! I love this cherry for not only the unique color of its blossoms but their change from yellow to pink!!

The Ukon cherry is not much known even among Japanese people, who love cherry blossoms so much that one of their spring events is dining and wining under the trees🍷.

The cherry blossom season in Tokyo will soon be over, but you can't or shouldn't end the season without seeing them! They're yellow cherry blossoms or Ukon cherry (Cerasus Sato-zakura Group ‘Grandiflora’ A. Wagner)!! I've enjoyed them for the last three years, but they still amazes me.

Oshima cherry (Prunus speciosa) blossoms are white while Yoshino cherry (Prunus x yedoensis) blossoms are whitish pink, but do you know that there are yellow cherry blossoms? 

These are one such blossoms, Ukon (Cerasus Sato-zakura Group ‘Grandiflora’ A. Wagner)!! I first knew about Ukon blossoms last year, so this year I've been observing their growth from pale green buds opening to pale yellow blossoms, turning reddish, and these fully blooming Ukon cherry blossoms conclude the cherry blossom season this year in my neighborhood (i.e., Tokyo).

I couldn't believe my eyes😲! Do you know that there are yellowish green cherry blossoms? I saw them! In my neighborhood! They are Ukon cherry blossoms (Cerasus Sato-zakura Group ‘Grandiflora’ A. Wagner).
