Hydrangea 'Magical Revolution' マジカルレボリューション

Hydrangea macrophylla 'Magical Revolution' is really magical from two perspectives. Firstly, its spectacular, color-shifting transformation. The hydrangea changes from pale pink, blue, and green in early summer to red toward autumn. (Scroll down!) Secondly, its long life! The hydrangea's sepals (not petals!) are so sturdy that they can bloom for two to three months while changing color.  

It changes color to red in autumn due to increasing anthocyanin resulting from a change in the temperature and/or the amount of ultraviolet radiation. For whatever the reason, the hydrangea is just magically amazing.

Panicled Hydrangea (Hydrangea Paniculata) ノリウツギ（糊空木）

The panicled hydrangea (Hydrangea paniculata) is native to east Asia and can be found across Japan. The hydrangea look to me resembling oakleaf hydrangea (Hydrangea quercifolia), so I often mistook the latter for panicled hydrangeas and this is my first time seeing the panicled one still in bloom. 

The panicled hydrangea's Japanese name is "nori utsugi," which translates into "glue Deutzia," after their inner bark being used before to make a natural adhesive for washi, i.e., Japanese paper, and their stems resembling those of Deutzia.

Hydrangea Serrata Var. Yesoensis F. Cuspidata Cv. 四季咲き姫紫陽花（シキザキヒメアジサイ）

These are Hydrangea serrata var. yesoensis f. cuspidata cv., a type of mountain hydrangea. Their Japanese name is "shikizaki hime ajisai," which translates into "hydrangea blooming all year round." As the name suggests, the hydrangeas bloom for a longer period, i.e., the six months from June to December (not throughout the year though). Another feature is that the blooms change color at different pace one by one, resulting in various shades of pink, blue and purple. 

Their blue and purple color is beautiful but their bluish, pinkish, and purplish sepia gradients evoke a sense of nostalgic beauty. (Scroll down!)

Annabelle Hydrangea (Hydrangea Arborescens 'Annabelle') アナベル

The Annabelle hydrangea (Hydrangea arborescens 'Annabelle') is a cultivar of Hydrangea arborescens. The hydrangea is a late bloomer, producing flowers from May to July, which are lime green at first, turning white and then green again. Below are the shots of various hydrangeas. It's almost impossible to classify lacecap hydrangeas (Hydrangea macrophylla f. normalis) based on color. Each one has cream, yellow, blue, purple, green, pink, and red fertile flowers surrounded by green, pink, blue, purple, red, and even white sterile decorative sepals, changing their gradients as time passes. It's reasonable that one of its Japanese names is "shichi henge," which translates into "seven changes." To see lacecap hydrangeas in pink or purple, read this post!

Two-Toned Mophead Hydrangeas 縁取りの紫陽花と上野（谷中）天王寺

In Japan, June is the month of rain and hydrangeas, and people across the nation enjoy their various types. Those in this post are one of them, two-toned mophead hydrangeas.

I saw some of such blooms at Tennoji temple in Ueno Tokyo, which has an interesting history. The temple originally belonged to the Nichiren school of Buddhism but was persecuted by the Edo government and at the end of the 17th century forcefully converted to the Tendai school with two monks at the temple being sent away to a distant island. This occurred because the Nichiren school refuted other Buddhist schools, provoking the anger of not only the priests but also the country's rulers, resulting in the persecution of the Nichiren sect and temples of that sect. 

But now, nothing at the temple reminds visitors of such a history. The old temple just sits there with beautiful hydrangeas.

Oakleaf Hydrangea (Hydrangea Quercifolia) カシワバアジサイ（柏葉紫陽花）

These are oakleaf hydrangeas (Hydrangea quercifolia). As suggested by the name, they have oak leaf shaped leaves. The flowers are greenish white at first but turn white and then red. The leaves also turn red in autumn. Like other hydrangeas, what look like petals are not petals but are sepals. Some blooms below (scroll down) are called "harmony" oakleaf hydrangeas. Kurenai hydrangea (Hydrangea serrata var. 'Kurenai') is a type of mountain hydrangeas. It starts to flower in early May and at that time its sepals (not petals!) are white and then turn red as suggested by the name kurenai, which means red. Because of such a color change, I often assume a kurenai hydrangea as a white hydrangea at first and realize it's a kurenai one after it turns red a week or two later.

Pink/Purple Lacecap Hydrangea ピンク・紫のガクアジサイ（額紫陽花）

Hydrangeas are pleasing with their colors and these pink and purple mountain hydrangeas in particular because the blooms have not only beautiful sepals (sterile flowers) but also pretty petals (fertile flowers). Mikata-yae hydrangeas (Hydrangea serrata (Thunb. ex Murr.) Ser. "Mikata-yae"), early bloomers, are now in full bloom. The buds looked like green stars at the beginning of May, then have turned blue, and are still hanging to pink or purple. Mikata-yae hydrangeas are said to be one of the most beautiful blue hydrangeas.

The hydrangea season in Japan should be soon over because of the heat spell this week, which has started earlier than usual despite the rainy season. Then, I found this yellow green hydrangea. The bloom should turn pinkish, reddish, and/or purplish as other hydrangeas do or turn brown or die due to the high temperatures. So, I'm writing this post to keep records of these beautiful pale yellow green sepals.

"Season Defying😆" Hydrangeas 美魔女紫陽花😆

Do you do something for anti-aging? If so, take a look at the hydrangea. It's so anti-aging or season defiant, isn't it? You can see how it's so rare by looking at the 2nd photo! I'm not that interested in anti-aging but still want to know why only this bloom can keep such a beautiful color.😆

These are mophead hydrangeas. Their bright deep pink/red sepals with a pale blue center (can you see?) are so beautiful. 

The color of hydrangeas depends on the pH level of the soil with higher acidity levels resulting in blue flowers and alkaline soil producing pink flowers, which means that the soil there is alkaline. By the way, do you know that the human body is designed to keep the blood pH within a narrow alkaline range? Does it mean that maybe, just maybe a body is buried under these hydrangeas? I didn't know....😱
