Mealycup sages (Salvia farinacea) are native to North America and Mexico. They're perennial there but annual in Japan. Hovering over them are burnt-spot hummingbird hawkmoths (Macroglossum pyrrhosticta). Surprisingly to me, they're not bees or wasps but moths. I've seen them many times, but they move from one flower to another so swiftly that I had no chance to photograph them. Today, however, while I was taking photos of the sages, hawkmoths came to the flowers, luckily giving me the chance to take pictures of them. Their larvae's host plants are skunkvine.

Anise-Scented Sage (Salvia Guaranitica) ガラニチカ

Arghhhhhhhhhh! Om nom nom... I ran towards these sounds and found them, i.e., a purple flower devouring a common straight swift butterfly (1st photo) and others shouting (3rd)!

These are flowers of Salvia guaranitica or more commonly the anise-scented sage or hummingbird sage. Their color is so beautiful but the flower looks like some reptiles opening their months. The hummingbird sage is native to South America, so someone must have planted them there (in Central Tokyo) and now they've grown too wild out of control.

Anise-Scented Sage ガラニチカ

This is anise-scented sage I saw early August while walking in my neighborhood. The violet color was so beautiful, standing out from its surroundings.

The rainy season was very long in Japan this year, two weeks longer than usual, and it was cool, too cool for July, but the subsequent heat wave starting early August is extreme, so hot, so humid that I have given up doing morning walk for the last week.....😭

Anise-scented sage is called meadow sage in Japan because of an importer's mistake.

ガラニチカです。言葉では表現できないほどの色の美しさです。

今年は梅雨が長く、しかもそれを補って余りある（？）暑さ。おかげでここ１週間ほどウォーキングできていません😭

ちなみにこの花、メドウセージとも呼ばれていますがそれは間違い。輸入され始めたころに業者が間違って付けてしまったそうです。
