Skunkvine (Paederia foetida) is native to Asia and can be found across Japan. Because it is notoriously smelly, its Japanese name is hekusokazura, which translates to 'fart-dung vine.' The plant is so resilient that an imperial court official during the Nara period (710–794) wrote a waka poem comparing his own tenacity to the plant. The poem appears in the Manyōshū, the oldest extant collection of Japanese waka poetry.
Despite its terrible name and smell, the flower's glossy red center always reminds me of jam thumbprint cookies.

ヘクソカズラ（屁糞葛）です。アジア原産。日本全国で見られます。名前の由来は臭いから。英語名も skunkvine（スカンク蔓）。世界中で知られている「臭い」植物です。
でもご存じですか。ヘクソカズラはなんと、万葉集に収められているほど由緒ある？植物なのです。「かわらふじに延ひおほとれる屎葛（くそかずら）絶ゆることなく宮仕えせむ（高宮王）」という歌は、ヘクソカズラのように強くたくましく宮仕えしたいものだという意味だそうです。
こんなにひどい名前の臭い植物ですが、私は見るたびにロシアンクッキーを思い出します。
