Weigela Coraeensis 箱根空木（ハコネウツギ）

There are a variety of weigelas but this is my favorite, Weigela coraeensis. I love it for the color change from white to pale pink, then to reddish purple. Because of the color change, Weigela coraeensis means "fickleness" in the Japanese floriography.

These are Weigela coraeensis. I wrote about another weigela, i.e., Weigela floribunda, last month but I like Weigela coraeensis better because the flower changes its color from white to pale pink, then to reddish purple! Because of such a change, Weigela coraeensis means "fickleness" in the Japanese floriography.

This is Weigela coraeensis, my favorite Weigela because of its changing color from white, pink, to ultimately deep purple, and that's why the flower means capriciousness (in Japan). You can see how capricious the flower is by looking at the first and second photos! 

The weigela attracts many bugs, e.g., ants, ladybugs and Asian ladybeetle chrysalises (3rd and 4th photos). Ladybug chrysalises look like the adults to repel predators because adult ladybeetles eject toxic blood when attacked.

Everyone makes mistakes, and every flower makes mistakes. This is weigela coraeensis or more commonly known as Japanese weigela. Weigela generally flowers in early summer. I wrote three types of them this May, too. So, what's happened to this😆? 

Unlike other types of weigela, Japanese weigela changes its flower color from white to pale pink, then to reddish purple. It's understandable that the flower means "fickleness" in Japanese floriography.

These are three types of weigela in my neighborhood. I saw weigela coraeensis last year, but didn't know about the other two: 

1. Weigela coraeensis
2. Weigela florida
3. Weigela florida 'variegata'

I like this weigela the best because of the glossier color than the other two. Weigela coraeensis changes the color from white to pale pink, then to reddish purple, which is why the flower means "fickleness" in the Japanese floriography.

I wrote about Japanese weigela in May. I saw the tree again a few days ago and was amazed again by this tree flowering in three colors, white, pink, and purple!

箱根空木です。一つの木に三色の花。驚きました。白から淡いピンク、そして濃い紫に変わるそうです。花言葉が「移り気」なのも納得です。

箱根空木は英語では「Japanese weigela」、以前書いた通常の空木（deutzia crenata）とは違う仲間だそうです。
