June in Japan means rainy season and hydrangeas! People all over the country love seeing the different varieties. The ones in this post are two-toned mopheads.
I saw some of these blooms at
Tennoji temple in Ueno, Tokyo, which has a fascinating history. The temple originally belonged to the Nichiren school of Buddhism, but it was persecuted by the Edo government and forcefully converted to the Tendai school at the end of the 17th century, with two of its monks exiled to a distant island. This happened because the Nichiren school fiercely criticized other Buddhist sects, angering both rival priests and the country's rulers, which led to a broader crackdown on the sect and its temples.
Today, however, nothing at the site reminds visitors of that turbulent past; the old temple simply stands in peace, surrounded by beautiful hydrangeas.

縁取りの紫陽花です。
上野天王寺で初めて見た時は驚きました。
天王子は元々日蓮宗のお寺でしたが、江戸幕府に弾圧され、17世紀末には天台宗に改宗させられました。なかなか激しい歴史です。でも今はそんな姿を露も感じさせない静かな佇まいと四季折々の花や草木で私たちを楽しませてくれます。
