Two-Toned Mophead Hydrangeas

Japanese follows English.

In Japan, June is the month of rain and hydrangeas, and people across the nation enjoy their various types. So, I was so happy to see such uniquely pretty hydrangeas at Tennoji temple in Ueno Tokyo!! (Scroll down to see other types of hydrangeas, such as lacecap, oakleaf, panicled, white, and color changing hydrangeas!)

Tennoji temple, Ueno, Tokyo

Can't see the hydrangeas from the entrance

The temple has several interesting things, such as a magnolia grandiflora tree, a Japanese stewartia tree (which is called by a wrong name in Japan), and an interesting history.

The temple originally belonged to the Nichiren school of Buddhism but was persecuted by the Edo government and at the end of the 17th century forcefully converted to the Tendai school with two monks at the temple being sent away to a distant island.

The Nichiren school refuted other Buddhist schools, provoking the anger of not only the priests but also the country's rulers, resulting in the persecution of the Nichiren sect and temples of that sect. But now, Tennoji temple has nothing that reminds visitors of such a history, but just beautiful trees and these hydrangeas.

This is the 11th post of a series of hydrangeas this year. If you're interested in other hydrangeas, read the following posts, too!
