This is a netsuke titled 'Dog Days,' crafted from ivory by Gaho Goto, a Japanese netsuke artist. The bulldog with sweat dripping down its face is so funny. It's housed at the Tokyo National Museum.
Many suffer and even die from heat exhaustion around the world, including Japan, where the dog days usually start in early August with temperatures reaching 40°C (104°F).
Its Japanese title is 'mōsho' (extreme heat), but because of recent intense summers, the Japan Meteorological Agency coined a new term for these heatwaves in April 2026: 'kokushobi' (cruelly hot day). A mōsho day is 35°C or higher, while a kokusho day is 40°C or higher. So, is it time to change the netsuke's name to 'Kokusho'? Everything changes, but this is a change for the worse.

早速ですが「Dog days」ってどういう意味でしょう！
そう「猛暑」で～す。ブルちゃんの汗が暑さをいやっていうほど表しています。根付大好き！ブルちゃん大好き！というわけで私の「推し根付」です。でも2026年4月からは猛暑日は一番暑い日ではなくなってしまいました。一番暑いのは酷暑日。最高気温が40度以上の日をそう言うそうです。時代は変わる。でもこういう変化は嫌です。。。
