This 5cm tall bald man is one of the netsuke items in the Prince Takamado Collection at Tokyo National Museum. This was carved by Yoji Yamada from boxwood. It's so kawaii, isn't it!!
Two-legged yokai (goblin) carved by Yoji Yamada of boxwood 「妖怪二本足」山田洋治作 |
The pronunciation of the carver's name, Yoji Yamada, is exactly the same as that of one of the most famous Japanese film directors Yoji Yamada, but their Chinese characters are different. The carver's name is 山田洋治 while the director's is 山田洋次. The carver Yamada used to make netsuke while working as a company employee.
According to Encyclopedia Britannica, "a netsuke, ornamental togglelike piece, usually of carved ivory, used to attach a medicine box, pipe, or tobacco pouch to the obi (sash) of a Japanese man’s traditional dress. During the Tokugawa period (1603–1868), netsukes were an indispensable item of dress as well as being fine works of miniature art."
I can't agree more. Netsuke is miniature art and that's why I love netsuke!!💛 If you also like netsuke, read the following posts!

東京国立博物館高円宮コレクションで見つけた「妖怪二本足」 です。根付彫刻家の山田洋治氏(山田洋次監督とは字が違います。。。)サラリーマンをしながら根付を彫られていたそうです。
Encyclopedia Britannica によると、根付は実用的のみならず、ミニチュア芸術でもあったとありました。一つ一つが小宇宙でかわいいですよね。大好きです!
根付お好きな方は下もどうぞ!
