This 3cm tall netsuke is titled 'Watermelon' and housed at the Tokyo National Museum. It was crafted with maki-e lacquer painting by Kinuyo Hariya, a Japanese netsuke and maki-e artist.

Netsuke are usually not this colorful; they are mostly the color of their material, such as ivory or wood. But because of Ms. Hariya's skill in combining miniature carving techniques with colorful lacquer sprinkling, this small summer fruit is amazingly green and different from traditional netsuke!
