Netsuke - "Ground Cherry" Is Scary😱

This is Ground Cherry, a netsuke carved from amber with lacquer by Akemi Sasaki. I saw this at the Tokyo National Museum last August.

Ground cherries are so cute that you’d never imagine the plant's dark side! Their roots actually contain histonin, which triggers uterine contractions and can cause miscarriages in pregnant women. In fact, Japan used ground cherries for this exact purpose during the Edo period 😱

This dark side of ground cherries was featured by Edogawa Ranpo (1894–1965) in his short story 'Poison Weeds.' Ranpo, a definitive critic and pioneer of Japanese mystery fiction, named the story after the plant, which is believed to be the ground cherry. It is one of my favorite pieces of his work, highly reminiscent of Saki and Roald Dahl.
