Netsuke "Bodhidharma (Daruma)"

Japanese follows English.

This is netsuke titled "Daruma" carved from ivory by Hosen Miyazawa. I saw this 3 cm tall netsuke at Tokyo National Museum early last year.

"Daruma" by Hosen Miyazawa, ivory 「

Bodhidharma or in Japan Daruma is a semi-legendary Indian or Persian Buddhist monk and the founder of Zen Buddhism in China in the 5th or 6th century, but this Daruma doesn't look like a Buddhist monk at all, and I just can't keep my eyes off his chubby belly! Yes I love chubby things!!

I have one question. Is his belly bare or covered by something? I think it's bare like Frenchie puppy bellies....

If you want to see other netsuke, read the following posts!
