Netsuke - "Ground Cherry" Is Scary😱 根付 -「ほおずき」は怖い😱

This is "Ground Cherry," a netsuke carved from amber with lacquer by Akemi Sasaki. I saw this at Tokyo National Museum last August.

Cawaii! カワイイです！

Ground cherry is so cute that you may not be able to imagine the dark (or practical) side of this plant, but its rhizome contains histones, which causes the contraction of the uterus and then miscarriage if taken by pregnant women. Japan actually used ground cherries for that purpose during the Edo period😱...

And this dark side of ground cherries was used by Ranpo Edogawa (1894 - 1965) in one of his short stories, "Poison Weeds." Ranpo is a Japanese mystery writer and critic who played a major role in the development of Japanese mystery fiction, and "Poison Weeds," believed to be ground cherries, is one of my favorite stories of Ranpo, reminding me of Saki and Dahl.

佐々木明美作「ほおずき」です。琥珀と漆でできています。去年の夏、東京国立博物館で見かけました。

ほおずきってとっても可愛いですよね。でも地下茎にはヒストニンという成分が含まれていて、妊婦が服用したら流産するそうです。江戸時代には堕胎薬として使われていたとか😱

江戸川乱歩が（おそらく）ほおずきを念頭に「毒草」という話を書いています。読むとほおずきの印象が変わると思います。サキやダールを思わせる話で私のお気に入りです。
