The rose glory bower (Clerodendrum bungei) is native to China and northern India and came to Japan during the Edo period (1603-1858). Its Japanese name is "botan kusagi," which translates into "peony smelly tree," after its leaves becoming smelly when crushed.

牡丹臭木（ボタンクサギ）です。中国南部原産。日本には観賞用として江戸時代に持ち込まれました。花期は7月から9月です。葉っぱをつぶすと臭いので「臭木」です。
