Hardy yellow hibiscuses are so lemon yellow in July and the leaves are so orange and red in December!
Hi! I'm Kei Narujima. This is a blog about flowers, plants, and bugs I saw in Tokyo, and sometimes art and Japanese culture that bring you a smile or make you think (or so I hope)!!

"You're feeling very sleepy....😪." I heard someone say this when looking at the center of the flower.
These are hardy yellow hibiscuses (Hibiscus hamabo). The stark contrast between the lemon yellow and the dark red always catches my eye. I wanted to photograph the open yellow flowers but I see them only in the early morning, so the flowers are always half open😂.

Hibiscuses in various colors have started to bloom in my neighborhood and this is my favorite, Hibiscus hamabo or hardy yellow hibiscus. I love the stark contrast between its lemon yellow petals and deep red flower center. (And don't forget that in autumn the leaves beautifully turn yellow, red and reddish purple!)

Hibiscus hamabo is cold and salt tolerant, but despite its hardy nature, it entertains people with the lemon yellow flowers with a dark red center in July and August while in autumn with such colorful autumn leaves.

Hibiscuses are now in full bloom across Japan, but they're so diverse in the color and flower size that hibiscus hamabo is completely different from hibiscus moscheutos (swamp rose-mallow) I wrote about several days ago. Hibiscus hamabo is bright lemon yellow and the flowers I saw were all less than 10 cm in diameter while swamp rose-mallow is pink or red, and HUGE like an electric fan😆!!
You would imagine nothing sad about such beautiful flowers. I didn't either until I learned that hibiscus hamabo is on the verge of extinction or already extinct in some prefectures in Japan. The flower is so bright, but now I can't see hibiscus hamabo without feeling "mono no aware" or a "sense of ephemerality."
Four Hibiscuses - Hamabo, Rosa-Sinensis, Moscheutos, Syriacus 4

I felt a little sad about the end of the hydrangea season, so the beginning of the hibiscus season got me excited!!

I wrote about hibiscus moscheutos (or swamp rose mallow) and hibiscus syriacus (or Korean rose) a few days ago. I had already seen this yellow flower, but didn't realize that it was another hibiscus, hibiscus hamabo.
Then, I found the red hibiscus rosa-sinensis or Chinese hibiscus below, the only hibiscus called "hibiscus" in Japan. It's so confusing that hibiscus hamabo, hibiscus rosa-sinensis, hibiscus monscheutos and hibiscus syriacus are not called hibiscus in Japan!!
The difference between hibiscus rosa-sinensis (above) and hibiscus moscheutos (below) is where the stamens are attached. The stamens of hibiscus rosa-sinensis (above) are attached to the top of the style while those of hibiscus moscheutos (below) to a lower part of the style.

Stamens are on the tip of style
Hibiscus moscheutos Stamens are attached to lower part of style
White hibiscus moscheutos
Hibiscus moscheutos' bud
Then, I found white, pale purple and bright pink hibiscus syriacus flowers below.

Pale purple hibiscus syriacus
Bright pink hibiscus syriacus
