Showy Evening Primrose (Oenothera speciosa)

I thought that they were gigantic rosy evening-primroses (Oenothera rosea) at first and found at home they are not but showy evening primroses. This primrose is native to North America and was imported to Japan as an ornamental plant and can now be found across Japan. The primrose produces flowers from May to July in Japan, which are 4-5 cm in diameter and open during only the day. Because of that, its Japanese name is "hiruzaki tsukimisou," which translates into "primrose opening during the day."

Fragrant Evening-Primrose (Oenothera Stricta)

Fragrant evening-primrose (Oenothera stricta) is native to South America, was imported to Japan in the late 19th century, and can now be found across Japan. This evening-primrose resembles common evening-primrose (Oenothera biennis) very much with one easy-to-tell difference, i.e., fragrant evening primroses turn orange as they wither. The other flower in the pictures, which has turned orange, told me these were not common but fragrant evening primroses.

White Evening-Primrose (Oenothera Rosea)

Evening primroses (Oenothera rosea) are native to America but can now be found across Japan. It usually produces pink flowers from May to September but some have white ones like those in these pictures. Seeing flowers brings me happiness and seeing white evening primroses especially does so because it's so rare to find them. Finding white ones makes me feel as if I had found four-leaf clovers!

Rosy Evening-Primrose (Oenothera Rosea)

Rosy evening-primroses have started to bloom in my neighborhood and this morning I found one of them different. It had a black spot on it. That was a horsefly. I approached quietly and was able to take photos without waking the bug up.

Cutleaf Evening Primrose (Oenothera Laciniata)

Cutleaf evening primrose (Oenothera laciniata) is native to North America, came to Japan at the end of 19th century and can now be found across Japan. Cutleaf evening primrose and fragrant evening primrose resemble each other and both turn orange as they wither but there's a big difference, that is, size, i.e., Cutleaf evening primrose is much smaller than fragrant evening primrose. Cutleaf evening primrose's Japanese name is "komatsuyoigusa," which translates into "small Oenothera." Easy to remember!
