I often look up at the sky. One day just before sunset, I noticed these crepuscular rays—also known as Jacob’s ladder or God rays. I had never heard of the term "crepuscular rays," or even its literal Japanese translation, "hakumei kousen," until I looked it up to write this post. Instead, I used to just say, "It looks like a Buddha halo is shining." I am not religious, but these rays always make me feel like there might be something greater than ourselves up there. I took the photos below at sunset on different days.

What do you think are the essential skills and capabilities for simultaneous interpreting from Japanese to English? English-speaking skills? Yes, of course, but there is another key capability: "negative capability." And this doesn't apply to just any language pair. Before jumping into the details, let's look at what "negative capability" means.

I always wondered why there are so many celadon colors, so looked it up. According to Encyclopedia Britannica, "Celadon is greenish ceramic glaze that is used on stoneware. Celadon is used both for the glaze itself and for the article so glazed. It is particularly valued in China, Korea, Thailand, and Japan."

I still didn't understand why the green or blue* colors of celadon porcelain vary between articles. So, I went to the Asian Gallery (Toyokan) of Tokyo National Museum to compare celadon ware there. (I say "blue" because in Japanese, celadon glaze is "青磁," meaning "blue porcelain.")

Everyone has made at least one (or maybe even hundreds of!) spelling errors in their life. I'm no exception. I misspelled "mouth" as "month" in a post about netsuke sculpture and was unaware of it until it was pointed out by a kind reader. I always perform a spell check before publishing posts or submitting documents to clients at work. However, because writing "month" instead of "mouth" isn't a misspelling but a misuse of words, it went through the spell check without being detected.

A couple of weeks ago, I interpreted for the first time in a while. I used to do that every day, but not anymore. One of the directors, who's joined the company just recently, doesn't speak Japanese at all and needed someone translating through a two-hour internal meeting simultaneously, so I interpreted for him using a technique called "whispering," a form of simultaneous interpreting.

Byakugoji Temple sits on a hillside, so you have to walk a bit to reach the entrance and then climb a long stone staircase to enjoy a panoramic view of Nara City, but it is well worth it.

I went to Kyoto Botanical Garden a few days ago. The garden held a special exhibition of fuchsia flowers. I'm not interested in plants, just wanting to kill time, but found these! How beautiful and lively these two-tone-color fuchsia flowers are! So colorful and powerful, aren't they! People in Japan talk about only cherry blossoms from late March through early April, but don't forget that tulips are also in bloom. 

Cherry blossoms make me aware of ephemerality of life, but these tulips' bright colors gave me vitality and energy.

Kyoto - Fushimi Inari Taisha Food Stalls Go Away 伏見稲荷の屋台がなくなるんだって

It's been reported that food stalls in Fushimi Inari Taisha Shrine will all go away at the end of March 2019.

This shrine, which is famous for its thousands of vermilion torii arches and as the patron of business, is very popular among not only Japanese people but also tourists from overseas. I went there two years ago, climbing the mountain behind it, and wrote a fictional story based on the experience.

The reason for this drastic decision is overtourism. The number of visitors of the shrine has doubled for the last five years, resulting in too many food stalls along one of the major streets in this area, reducing its width to almost two thirds and causing a trash problem. The police, receiving complaints from local residents, have stopped issuing business licenses to these food stall owners since April 2018.

Fushimi Inari is also famous for sparrow yakitori, i.e., grilled sparrow. As I didn't have it last time, I decided to give it a try next time, but maybe I shouldn't go there for now and so it seems that this small wish may not be fulfilled for a while.

伏見稲荷大社の屋台、3月で全部立ち退くそうです。2年前に行ったときにあまりの混雑ぶりに驚きましたが、屋台をなくさなければならないほど悪化しているとは知りませんでした。 雀の焼鳥、今度行ったら食べてみようと思っていたのですが、当分行かない方がいいようですね。残念です｡｡。

1. Saki offerings to Matsuo Taisha

I went to Matuo Taisha shrine in Arashiyama Kyoto on December 30, 2018. I didn't plan to go there, but happened to know that this famous shrine is near Arashiyama, my destination on that day. Matsuo Taisha is famous for enshrining God of sake (or saki) protecting people who not only produce, but also sell or drink sake. It's understandable for the shrine to receive so many offerings from sake manufacturers across Japan.

As a sake lover, I had wanted to go to Matsuo Taisha shrine for a long time, but thought it was an inconvenient place to go. I was wrong. The shrine is very close to the very famous tourist site Arashiyama, in which Horinji temple is located. The temple enshrines a deity of electricity and radio wave and I happened to go there to avoid crowd in Arashiyama. After enjoying beautiful views from this temple, not only from the top of its stairs (Picture 2), but also its viewpoint (Picture 3), I again happened to find a sign showing Matsuo Taisha shrine being only 2.1 km from the temple.

If you are now in Arashiyma, but disappointed at the crowd and want to go to a quiet place nearby, cross the Katsuragawa River and go to Horinji temple. You can enjoy a serene atmosphere and in 20 minutes walk, pray to the sake deity at Matsuo Taisha. You can go to Matsuo Taisha shrine also by the Hankyu Line, one stop from the Arashiyama station.   

年末年始と京都で過ごしました。12月28日に嵐山に行ったら相変わらずの混雑で大失敗。でも桂川を渡ってふらふらしていたら法輪寺を見つけました。電気と電波の神様を祭っているとのこと。すると何と松尾大社まで2.1キロという標識を発見。歩いて行ってみました。

松尾大社はお酒の神様。お酒大好きな（あまり飲めないけど）私にとっては大事な神様。ちゃんとお礼を言いました。

嵐山であまりの人込みにうんざりしたら、法輪寺、そしてそこから2キロほどの松尾大社はお勧めです。ちなみに嵐山から松尾大社までは阪急電車で一駅。歩き疲れた方は電車でどうぞ！
