Shosoin Exhibition at Night Museum

Japanese follows English.

Japanese say that autumn is the best season for art. That may be true because I felt an urge to see something beautiful when finishing dinner near the Tokyo Station last Saturday. I checked the website of Tokyo National Museum and found the facility in Ueno, which is usually open from 9:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., was open through 9 p.m. on the day. So, I said to my husband, "Let's go to Tokyo National Museum!"

At night, the Ueno park, through which we went to the museum, and the museum itself showed their different side, so dark and mystical, completely different from what they look in daylight.

The special exhibition of the treasures of Shosoin, the treasure house of Todaiji temple in Nara prefecture, was being held (and will be running until November 24). And the pieces on view at the exhibition, such as the "five-stringed biwa lute made of red sandalwood with mother-of-pearl inlay" coming from China in the 8th century, are real "treasures."

As photography is not allowed, the photo below is of its replica made in 1899. It's not bad, but the real one is more exquisitely beautiful. Click here to take a look at this astonishingly beautiful lute with its back side also decorated with mother-of-pearl and turtle shells.

Another amazing piece is an "eight-lobed bronze mirror decorated on the back with mother-of-pearl inlay." Its back side is inlaid with not only with mother of pearl, but also red amber and turquoise. As neither could I take a picture of the mirror nor did they have its replica, again click here to take a glimpse at this so breathtakingly beautiful mirror! It's like a view through kaleidoscope!

If you're now or any time until November 24 in Japan, you should definitely go there, if possible, at a quieter time, like after 6 p.m. on Friday or Saturday. (You can check the hours here.) You can enjoy not only antique exquisite treasures travelling far from China to here in Japan, but also quiet and beautiful autumn night at the Ueno Park!
