Season of Fruits - Persimmon, Hassaku/Ponkan Oranges

Japanese follows English.

Autumn is the time of harvest!!

Astringent or not, that is the question

Hassaku orange

Ponkano orange

Persimmons are one of the most popular autumn fruits in Japan. It has two types, however, astringent or non-astringent, and it's difficult to tell which is which until cut. Astringent persimmons are usually eaten after being dried.

My husband's late maternal grandfather loved persimmons, especially ripe ones, and was eating a persimmon when I first visited his house. He offered me one, i.e., a ripe (or overripe) persimmon. It's natural and very kind of him to offer me what he thought was the best fruit, but you know what? I hate the slimy texture of any ripe or overripe fruits and the persimmon he was eating was overripe...

The granddad was like a father for my husband as they had lived together for a long time, and I'm a typical Japanese woman, meaning that I cannot (or am not supposed to) say no, so I braced myself for the first slimy persimmon in my life, but Phew!! Thanks to his love for persimmons, I didn't have to eat it. He had eaten all of the persimmons in the house😄
