Netsuke "Octopus" - Is Octopus An Insect?

This is an ivory netsuke of an octopus carved by Hosen Miyazawa, which I saw last year at the Tokyo National Museum.

"Octopus" is written as "蛸" in Chinese character in Japan but there is something wrong with this - the left half of this Chinese character "虫" means an insect. Why does "octopus" contain an insect?

One explanation is that the octopus was once classified as an insect. This happened because:
  • It was called a "sea spider" due to its eight legs, much like a spider.
  • Spiders were mistakenly believed to be insects at the time.
Another explanation is that this actually refers to not only insects 🐛 (which is more common now, though), but also fish 🐟, shellfish 🐚, snakes🐍(蛇), shrimps🦐 (蝦), and frogs/toads🐸(蛙). OMG 😲, I had no idea...
