This is the flower of alangium platanifolium (Siebold et Zucc.) Harms var. trilobatum (Miq.) Ohwi. The name is too long, but the curled white petals are so tiny and cute!

The tree is called "Gourd tree" in Japanese because of the resemblance of the leaves to gourd leaves, and on The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List of Threatened Species. I knew that many species, animals and plants, are on the verge of extinction but didn't know that such a list existed.
I went to the IUCN Red List website and found that the tree was registered as "Dan-pung-bak-jwi-na-mu," which is Korean, and the plant exists only in China, Koreas and Japan. This made me realize again that like or not, Japan is an Asian country and resolved to go to the garden to see the tree in autumn when the tree produces blue fruits.

瓜の木の花です。「瓜」の木と言っていますが、葉が瓜に似ているだけでウリ科ではありません（紛らわしい😤）。でも「クルリンパ」が可愛いから許します。
こんなに可愛いのに国際自然保護連合（IUCN）が作成した絶滅のおそれのある野生生物のリストの指定を受けています。ということで早速 IUCN のサイトへ。すると瓜の木って中国、朝鮮半島、日本にしかないんですね。好むと好まざるにかかわらず、日本はアジアの国なんです。実が生る秋にもう一度小石川植物園に行こうと思いました。
