White, Pink and Red Cape Periwinkles

Japanese follows English.

I like colors. I like color combinations. So, naturally, I like these bicolor cape periwinkles or Madagascar periwinkles.

Pale purple cape periwinkle with dark purple eye

Also called "Madagascar periwinkle"
Baby pink petals with pale pink eye

Pale pink petals with bright pink eye

White petals with yellow eye

White petals with red eye 紅白

Dark red petals with white eye

Red petals with red eye

In Japan, cape periwinkle is called "daily plants" because it flowers every day from early summer to late autumn. I'm happy that I can enjoy such a beautiful flower through autumn!

There is another thing which shouldn't be forgotten and which makes this flower prettier... Green leaves! A single color is beautiful, but a bicolor flower combined with the green leaves makes the flower look far prettier and more conspicuous. Diversity matters to not only people but flowers😆!

Marvel of Peru is Late Riser!!

Japanese follows English.

They were always asleep when I walked early morning, so I thought that they hadn't bloomed yet, but I was wrong. A few days ago, at around 4 p.m., I saw them all in full bloom.

These are marvel of Peru flowers, also called four o'clock flowers because they usually open from late afternoon or at dusk (namely between 4 p.m. and 8 p.m.).

In Japan, they are called "face powder flowers" because its endosperm was used as face powder during the Edo period (1603-1868).

I don't go out these days unless it's really necessary, but doing something at a different time from normal reminded me of what it was like before Covid-19....

Verbenas & Lantanas Look Same😅 - Seven Bicolor/Tricolor Ones

Japanese follows English.

I like small flowers. I like colorful flowers. This makes me like small and colorful flowers so much!!! The first one is my favorite because of the shape of the buds, which look like stars!!

Star-like buds - red, orange and pink

White and yellow

White, yellow, orange and pink

Red, orange and yellow

White, yellow and green

Yellow and pale green

Two yellow colors

To tell you the truth, I have given up on differentiating verbenas and lantanas because I don't think lay persons like me can tell which one is which. According to SFGATE, ".... Because of their similar characteristics, they’re often confused as the same plant..... Lantana and verbena appear similar, but they have different hardiness zones, growth habits and toxicity levels."

Okay, they are different in hardiness zones, growth habits and toxicity levels, but with only these, I can't make distinctions. I need more, like differences easy to see, such as differences in the color or shape of petals or leaves, but I couldn't find them, which made me give up on differentiating these two...

I can't tell which one is which, but can tell what they have in common! They are both small, colorful and pretty! That's why I love them both❤️!

Orange Lily - A Stamen Consists of Filament and Another 百合の雄しべ

Japanese follows English.

I like parts of a flower, i.e., pistil, style, stamen... Their shapes and points where they are attached vary between flowers. Their detailedness is amazing, which makes each flower unique! And that's why I love the orange lily below. Look at its long stamens!

Stamens of lily are long and conspicuous!

A stamen consists of a stalk called "filament" and the tip part called "another." Umm, is "another" the name of the tip part of a stamen? Please someone, give a better name to this beautiful brown parts!!

(If you wish to post your comment but don't have a Google account, select "anonymous" from the drop down menu titled "comment as"!)

「another」?

Suntanned or Sunburned Mini Sunflowers

Japanese follows English.

I thought that sunflower was yellow and tall, but that's not true. They are red and even black when suntanned or sunburned, so please be careful so that you won't be like these sunflowers😜

Of course I was kidding!! Sunflowers have been evolving and now can be orange, red and even black. They also have mini ones like those below.

Seven Types of Verbenas/Lantanas 7

Japanese follows English.

These are verbenas (or lantanas). I knew these small flowers were in bloom, but as they are everywhere, I just let them go. But one day, I saw them in various colors, which made me unable to ignore them.... Which one do you like the best?

White, pink, orange, yellow

Four Hibiscuses - Hamabo, Rosa-Sinensis, Moscheutos, Syriacus 4

Japanese follows English.

I wrote about hibiscus moscheutos (or swamp rose mallow) and hibiscus syriacus (or Korean rose) a few days ago. I had already seen this yellow flower, but didn't realize that it was another hibiscus, hibiscus hamabo.

Hibiscus hamabo

Then, I found the red hibiscus rosa-sinensis or Chinese hibiscus below, the only hibiscus called "hibiscus" in Japan. It's so confusing that hibiscus hamabo, hibiscus rosa-sinensis, hibiscus monscheutos and hibiscus syriacus are not called hibiscus in Japan!!

Stamens are on the tip of style

The difference between hibiscus rosa-sinensis (above) and hibiscus moscheutos (below) is where the stamens are attached. The stamens of hibiscus rosa-sinensis (above) are attached to the top of the style while those of hibiscus moscheutos (below) to a lower part of the style.

Then, I found white, pale purple and bright pink hibiscus syriacus flowers below.

White hibiscus syriacus

Pale purple hibiscus syriacus

Bright pink hibiscus syriacus

I felt a little sad about the end of the hydrangea season, so the beginning of the hibiscus season got me excited!!

Who's Francis Mason?

Japanese follows English.

They are Fransis Mason. Who's Francis Mason? That was what I thought when seeing the flower tag first a few months ago. It's funny that a flower has such a noble name, isn't it!

White Francis Mason abelia

White and pink

Pink Francis Mason

The flower tag says that Francis Mason is white, but I found a place where pink ones are in bloom side by side with the white ones. The combination of white and pink made them look prettier and gorgeous...

Francis Mason has another interesting characteristic. Although pink ones have just green leaves, white ones have variegated leaves, i.e., dark green leaves with golden-yellow margin.

I googled the reason for such a noble name, but couldn't find any information....

Japanese Bindweed & Morning Glory Have Siblings😆?

Japanese follows English.

These pale pink flowers are Japanese bindweed. I've seen them on roadsides every morning for the last month.

Japanese bindweed

The purple flowers below are morning glories although I rarely see them open early morning....

Morning glory still asleep?

Finally waking up....

Morning glory and Japanese bindweed are in the same family and this is more obvious when they are said in Japanese.

Morning glory             =    "morning face"
Japanese bindweed  =    "afternoon face"

See? It's clear that they are in the same "face" family. The thing is that the treatment of these siblings are terribly different, i.e., morning glory beautifully planted in gardens while Japanese bindweed abandoned on roadside...

They have two siblings in Japan, "evening face"and "night face," meaning "bottle gourd" and "moonflower" respectively. So, we have here the four siblings of the FACE family; "morning face," "afternoon face,"  "evening face," and "night face"!!

Of the four, however, "evening face (or bottle gourd)," an ingredient of sushi, "kanpyo (dried shavings of calabash)," is actually not a sibling because it's not in the bindweed but gourd family as shown in the English family name.....

Now I have seen two of the four real and quasi siblings in person, I'm wondering where I can find the other two......
