The Good Daughter

Japanese follows English.

I wonder why they quit jobs to go back to their parents' businesses. I'm talking about Takako Matsudaira, one of the characters of "Hageraka (Vulture)," a TBS's TV drama, and Kumiko Otsuka, the president of Otsuka Kagu, a Japanese furniture company in real world. Takako, a daughter of the owner of a luxurious hotel, came back to rebuild the hotel on the verge of bankruptcy, while Kumiko, coming back to her father's company, taking over the business after a battle against him and currently considering selling it after failing to rebuild it.

Both daughters are good, graduating from prestigious universities, joining large corporations and leaving the jobs to join the family business for the family, but ending up starting to fight their parents and siblings for what? For parents' love or money? I don't think so. They came back just because of their too strong attachment to their parents or their childhood worlds, which no longer exist.

I often take up children's attachment issues in this blog and believe that they are more typical among daughters who are good at sontaku, i.e., performing pre-emptive acts to ingratiate themselves to their superiors, including their parents. It took me (who was a "good" daughter) almost five years to be independent from my parents. I don't care about the TV character, but hope that Kumiko will find a good buyer of the business to start her own life.
