Jinglish - Rugby vs. Baseball 和製英語の観点からのラグビーと野球の比較考察

英語の後に日本語が続きます。

The 2019 Rugby World Cup is over. What surprised me most was that in rugby so many English terms are used as they are in the form of katakana with heavy Japanese accents, such as "nokku on (ノックオン)" for "knock on" and "mo-l (モール)" for "maul." They have no translated Japanese words.

This doesn't apply to baseball, however. So, here is a question. What do the following Jinglish terms mean; "dead ball," "easy fly," "fine play" and "entitle two base"? 

Jinglish is words and phrases which most Japanese people believe are English, but actually are all Japanese coined in Japan. I listed some such terms below.

I looked for on the Internet why such a weird thing has happened, i.e., importing English words, but not using them as they are (like rugby) or translating them into easy-to-understand Japanese, but changing them into "sound-like-English, but actually non-English" terms. I couldn't find a reason.

A colleague of mine, who is British, once asked me if the American company we then were working for had a "regal department" after reading a report written by the "legal" department. The answer was of course no. The legal department had started calling itself "リーガル (li-galu)" department and then confusing "legal" with "regal" because both "legal" and "regal" are pronounced the same in Japanese, i.e., "リーガル (li-galu)".... 

Evolution occurs not only to species, but also to languages......

ラグビーワールドカップが終わりました。見てるときに思ったのはラグビー英語って全部カタカナなんだということ。ノックオン、モール・アンプレアブルなどなど、英語がそのままカタカナで使われています。ところが野球の場合、カタカナ用語の多くは和製英語で英語として使うと笑われるという情報を入手！ 調べてみました。

何でこうもかけ離れてしまったのか｡｡｡「エンタイトルツーベース」なんて原語の「Ground rule double」より難しい単語（entitle）が含まれてしまってるではありませんか｡｡｡

以前勤めていた会社で、法務部 → リーガル部門 → Regal Department（本来は「Legal Department」）となってしまい、Regal Department と書かれた文書を読んだ英国人が「うちはいつから王室の仕事するようになったんだ」と大笑いしてました。

常々、和製英語恐るべしとは思っていますが、野球の世界がこんなにひどい、oops!「進化していた」なんて初めて知りました（笑）！
