Fig (Ficus carica) is native to west Asia, came to Japan either in the 1590s through Father Diogo de Mesquita, a Portuguese Jesuit who came to Japan in the 16th century as a missionary, or in around 1630 through China. Its flowers are hidden, growing inside the pear-shaped structure. This is the origin of its Japanese name "無花果," which translates into "no flower fruit." A fig fruit, however, is actually not a fruit but inverted flowers😮.

イチジク（無花果）です。西アジア原産で、日本には次のどちらかの経路で来たものと考えられています。(1) 1590年頃に宣教師メスキータ神父が、ポルトガルから苗木を持ち込んだ。(2) 1630年頃、中国経由で伝わった。
名前の通り、花はないように見えますが、実の内側に無数の小さな白い花がびっしりと咲いています。あの独特の触感は花だったんですね。
