The gooseneck loosestrife (Lysimachia clethroides) is native to east Asia and can be found across Japan, producing white flowers from June to August. It's edible and used to be eaten in Japan as a famine plant (although it tastes bitter and astringent). The plant's Japanese name is "
Okatora no o," which translates into "tiger tail growing on hills," after its flower spikes looking like tiger tails.

丘虎の尾（オカトラノオ）です。東アジア原産。日本でもあちこちで見られ、6月から8月に白い花を付けます。救荒植物として飢饉のときには食べられていたそうですが、味はまずいそうです。「丘に育ち、花穂の先端が虎の尾のように垂れ下がる」のでこの名が付きました。
