These are flowers of lespedeza or Japanese bush clovers. They've started to bloom again after going through this summer's intense heat. The lespedeza produce flowers from July to September but is a kigo or a season word associated with autumn, used in traditional forms of Japanese poetry, such as haiku, to indicate the season referred to in the poem. The summer is ending.
