Everyone has made at least one (or maybe even hundreds of!) spelling errors in their life. I'm no exception. I misspelled "mouth" as "month" in a post about netsuke sculpture and was unaware of it until it was pointed out by a kind reader. I always perform a spell check before publishing posts or submitting documents to clients at work. However, because writing "month" instead of "mouth" isn't a misspelling but a misuse of words, it went through the spell check without being detected.
About ten years ago, I was translating several provisions of Japanese tax law regarding donations. Like many other countries, Japan exempts certain donations to public-interest non-profits from tax. Because the document was for a major client and was quite urgent, I emailed it to a British proofreader the moment I finished and rushed to the restroom.
When I came back, I found him smirking and pointing at his screen—he had spotted a typo where I'd spelled 'public' as 'pubic' (OMG!). Ever since that day, my right ring finger twitches every single time I try to type the word 'public.'
先日、根付について書いたところ、読者の方からスペルミスをご指摘いただきました。（「mouth」が「month」になっておりました。ご指摘、ありがとうございました！）。ブログでも仕事でも、スペルチェックはいつもかけているのですが、こういうのはすり抜けてしまいます。そこで似た事例をもう一つ。
以前、日本の公益法人の寄附金税制について訳していた時のことです。日本に限らず、公益法人は寄附金について税制優遇を受けられる場合があります。急ぎの仕事だったのでガーっと訳し、ネイティブチェッカーにチェックをお願いし、トイレに行って戻ってきたら、そのチェッカー氏、ニヤニヤと画面を指差しているではありませんか。見ると何と「public interest（公益）」が「pubic interest (言えません｡｡｡)」に（恥）｡｡｡
以来、「public」と書くときは薬指がピクピクするようになりました。

薬指と小指は間違いが多いそうです。
こういう間違いはちょっとしたトラウマになりますよね(~_~;)
ブラインドタッチ（今はそう言わないんでしたっけ？）でキーボードや画面を見ず、傍らの入力する文章だけ見ているときに時にやりがちですね。
私も昔々、後ろから上司が画面を見ているときに変な言葉を入力してしまい笑われたことがあります。その言葉は忘れてしまいましたが、当時20歳ちょい過ぎだった私は凄く恥ずかしかったことを覚えています。けいさんと同じく「そっち系」の言葉だったはず…。(-_-;) 同じ間違いをしても今なら笑いに変えられる歳になりました。
rieo さん、コメントありがとうございます。ほんと恥ずかしかったです。私だけではないということで少し安心いたしました（へへ）。rieo さんの昔入力したというその「変な言葉」を知りたいです( ´艸｀)。
削除最近「恥ずかしい」という感情がどこかに行ってしまった気がしております♪ 代わりに、昔時々感じた「今を（懸命に）生きる」という思いが蘇ってきております。「岸が見えない海をとにかく泳いでいる」という感じでしょうか。苦しいというわけでもなく不思議な感じです。ちなみにクロールではなく横泳ぎです（笑）。体調に気を付けて頑張りたいと思う今日この頃です！
