Native to an area extending from Southwest Europe east to Southeast Asia, the firethorn, or pyracantha, can be found across Japan. It produces white flowers from May to June and begins bearing berries in October, which turn red, orange, and yellow and last through February.
Firethorn trees in Japan are usually 1 to 2 meters tall, but they can reach up to 5 meters. I once saw a gigantic one (scroll down), but it was removed due to redevelopment in the surrounding area—which is sad, but happens frequently in Central Tokyo.

常盤山査子（ピラカンサ）です。南ヨーロッパから西アジア原産で日本全国で見られます。4月から5月に白いかわいい花を付け、11月から1月には赤、橙、黄の美しい実を付けます。ほとんどの木は1、2メートルほどですが5メートル以上になるものもあります。一度5メートルほどの木（3枚目）を見たことがありますが、再開発のせいで伐採されてしまいました。都会の悲しさです。
