They're Veronica arvensis or more commonly wall speedwell or corn speedwell. With this Veronica, I've been able to see all three Veronica brothers this year.
As I've written many times, the three have terrible (but funny) Japanese names, which were given by Dr. Tomitaro Makino, a late Japanese botanist:
- Veronica polita (grey field-speedwell): "Dog's balls" due to the shape of its fruit
- Veronica persica (Persian speedwell): "Large dog's balls" because it resembles but is larger than polita
- Veronica arvensis (corn speedwell): "Standing dog's balls" because it resembles polita and its stems stand upright
P.S. Several days after taking the photos of these corn speedwells, I went there again, finding them all removed. I love them but for others, they obviously are just weeds that should be eliminated...
