Japanese winterberry (Ilex serrata) is native to China and Japan, so can be found across Japan. The winterberry produces cute, tiny (i.e., 3-4 mm in diameter) flowers from May to July and red fruits from September to next January, which turn red.
Its Japanese name is "
ume modoki," which translates into "fake Japanese apricot," after the resemblance of its leaves and branches to those of Japanese apricot. Do they?

ウメモドキ（梅擬）です。中国と日本が原産。5月から7月に小さい花を付け、9月から翌年1月に実を付けます。実は真っ赤になります。名前の由来を調べたら、葉や枝が梅に似ているからだそうです。そうかな？
