Lesser Quaking-Grass (Briza Minor) ヒメコバンソウ（姫小判草）

英語の後に日本語が続きます。

Lesser quaking-grass (Briza minor) is native to Europe and came to Japan during the Edo period (1603-1868). The plant produces spikelets form April to June, which are very tiny and cute but are so small that you wouldn't normally notice them. According to the internet, the spikelets produce a rattling sound when shaken or when wind passes through them. Next time I find them, I'll shake them, of course, gently.

The lesser quaking grass is "hime kobansou" in Japanese, which translates to "princess quaking grass" because it's smaller than another quaking grass, Briza maxima (big quaking grass). In Japan, smaller or adorable plant names often start with "hime," which means "princess."

姫小判草（ヒメコバンソウ）です。ヨーロッパ原産で日本には江戸時代に来たようです。これより大きいコバンソウ（小判草）の小穂は小判型で小判草。小判草より小さいのでこちらは姫小判草です。

ネットで知ったのですが、ヒメコバンソウの小穂（鈴なりにぶら下がっているものです。）、こんなにちっちゃいのに揺れると音がするそうです。よし、次見かけたら揺らしてみようっと。もちろん優しくね。。。
