You can find Japanese camellias scattered all over Tokyo and across Japan, but variegated blooms are much harder to come by.
Interestingly, some camellia trees have blooms of different colors—such as deep pink, pale pink, and variegated—depending on the amount of anthocyanins. The tree in the third and fourth photos has only one variegated bloom, while the tree in the seventh photo has both pink and variegated blooms. Nature always fascinates me!
Japanese camellias have been appreciated since at least the 8th century and cultivated for generations both in Japan and abroad. As a result, there are now about 250 varieties of Japanese camellias worldwide.

斑入りツバキです。斑入り椿の木は必ずしも全部の花が斑入りというわけではないようです。5枚目をご覧ください。斑入りと濃いピンクが混在しています。
椿は奈良時代の書物の中で触れられているほど日本では古くから愛され、その後、日本だけでなく海外でも品種改良が重ねられた結果、今では250種ほどあるそうです。
