Native to East Asia, chocolate vines (Akebia quinata) can be found across Japan. They bear pale purple flowers from April to May, followed by chocolate-scented fruits from September to October. Female flowers outnumber the males and are slightly larger.

While the fruits are edible, harvesting them is difficult because the yield is small and the fruit spoils quickly. I love chocolate vines for their color. In Japan, this purple shade is known as akebi (chocolate vine) color, which is one of the country's traditional colors.

木通（アケビ）です。4月から5月にやや大きな雌花を数個、雌花より小さな雄花を多数付けます。実が生るのは9月から10月です。一度食べてみたいのですが、収穫量が少なく傷みやすいので出回る量は少ないとのこと。残念。
アケビの魅力は何といっても薄紫の花の色。日本の古代色でアケビ色と言われています。
