Rabbit Shaped White Jade Container 白玉兎合子

This is a rabbit-shaped container housed at the Tokyo National Museum. It was carved from white jade during the Qing dynasty (18th–19th century). It really looks like a rabbit running through a field, doesn't it? The rabbit represents longevity in China.

China has a long history of crafting fine objects from jade and other gemstones using the qiaose technique, where artisans carve the stone to cleverly incorporate its natural color variations and hues.

東京国立博物館所蔵の「白玉兎合子」です。「合子」って入れ物という意味なんですね。英語（Container in shape of rabbit）の方がよく分かります。「俏色工芸」という石の特性を生かした工芸品です。中国で兎は「長寿」を意味するとのこと。本当に走ってるみたいですね。
