The chief of Tokyo Olympic organizing committee Yoshiro Mori's sexist remark* has caused an angry backlash, but we shouldn't overlook another appalling remark by a Japanese man to support Mori. The man said on Twitter, "It's terrible to criticize an elderly and sick person who works without compensation."
* Mori said on February 3 at a Japan Olympic Committee Council meeting, “Women have a strong sense of rivalry. If one (female) member raises her hand to speak, all the others feel the need to speak too. Everyone ends up saying something.”
Mori's remark is absolutely inappropriate and since this is not his first time or second or third, he should resign. He's a sexist. But the supporter's comment is also disgusting as it intends to change the focus of the argument. If Mori lacks capacity to take responsibility for his own words and actions for any reason, e.g., age or sickness, or no payment of compensation, he should resign immediately.
What makes it more complicated is that many Japanese think Mori should resign because of criticism around the world. Mori should resign because he's a sexist (although this has been accepted or acquiesced for a long time in Japan) and isn't fit to be the Tokyo Olympic chief or any position of any organizations in democratic countries.
It's been reported as of 12:30 of February 11 that Mori has decided to resign and will be replaced by Saburo Kawabuchi, a former Japanese football player and manager.
