The sawtooth oak (Quercus acutissima) is native to Northeast Asia and can be found all across Japan. While the tree is famous for its acorns, its unique cupules and flowers—which bloom from April to May—are also beautiful. The hanging flowers have always reminded me of a 'noren', the traditional fabric curtains hung at the entrance of Japanese izakaya restaurants 😆.
Interestingly, the word 'noren' has an entirely different meaning in business: it represents goodwill for accounting and tax purposes. Because a physical noren often displays a shop's trade name, the term evolved to symbolize a company’s customer trust and brand value.
As a relatively conservative country, Japan prefers a conservative approach whereby goodwill, meaning value in excess of market value, should decline over time. Japan also dislikes impairment testing, which can be manipulated by management. Which approach would you choose?
