White and Pink Deutzia Crenata 白とピンクの空木

These pink and white flowers look different but both are deutzia crenata.

Deutzia crenata has two Japanese names, "empty tree" because its stem is like a straw and "April flower" as it blooms in April of the lunar calendar.

In Japan, deutzia crenata has been a symbol of early summer, frequently appearing in its literature, such as "The Pillow Book," the Diary of Sei Shonagon, a courtesan, in the 10th century.

In the floriography, deutzia crenata means "rebirth" and "new beginning" in the western world while "secret" and "old-fashioned" in Japan.

白とピンクで違う植物に見えますがどちらも空木です。茎が空洞だから「空木」だそうです。卯月（旧暦の四月）に開花するので「卯の花」とも呼ばれます。

古くから初夏の風物詩とされ、枕草子にも出てきます。由緒ある花だったんですね。知りませんでした。

西洋の花言葉は「再生」と「新たな始まり」。
日本の花言葉は「秘密」そして「古風」です。
