Magnolia Liliiflora (Mulan Magnolia)

Japanese follows English.

What a surprise to see magnolia liliiflora grown that much while I was looking for cherry blossoms! I found these beautiful tulip-shaped purple flowers in not only my neighborhood but Tokyo National Museum. Magnolia liliiflora is known as Mulan magnolia or purple magnolia.

These purple flowers and white ones in bloom I saw late February are both magnolia but the difference in the color makes them look two completely different flowers.

They have a kid, magnolia x soulangeana or saucer magnolia, i.e., a hybrid plant between white and purple magnolias. Saucer magnolia is pink.
