Veronica Persica (Persian Speedwell)

Japanese follows English.

This is veronica persica or commonly Persian speedwell, i.e., a flower I've been wanting to see for a year.

Persian speedwell

Tiny but hardy!

Violet color against the backdrop of green is so beautiful!

It's cawaii but has a terrible Japanese name

I wanted to see Persian speedwell for such a long time because of its tininess and its terrible Japanese name "Large dog balls"😂!!

Persian speedwell is called such a name because it looks like, but is a little larger than, gray speedwell, which is called in Japanese "Dog balls" because of the fruits being like the balls of a dog. But you know what? Persian speedwell fruits are heart-shaped, not like dog balls at all!!!

Tomitaro Makino (1862 - 1957), a Japanese botanist, should be to blame. He's responsible for most of terrible Japanese flower names, including not only these speedwells, but also spreading hedge parsley, which is in Japanese "bush lice" because its seeds can attach to clothes like lice can.
